Diets Don't Work
Diets are a fairy tale. Remember: diets don’t work. What counts are calories, physical activity, stress control and sleep.
The problem with yo-yo diets
The dangerous thing is yo-yo dieting: you gain weight, you lose weight, you gain weight, you lose weight, in a short time. In the long run that has a very serious consequence: your basal metabolism goes down. You burn fewer calories at rest, so in the long run you put on more weight.
One study followed contestants from a weight-loss TV show for six years: their resting metabolism was still about 500 calories a day lower than expected (Fothergill et al., Obesity, 2016).
So what do you do?
Eat less and exercise more every day, once, twice or three times a day, even if it’s only a little. You have to move your body: walk, dance.
Chew slowly, and above all don’t eat in front of the TV.
Have breakfast early, with plenty of protein, and no orange juice: it has too much sugar.
And fasting, which is a gap of time without food: at least 12 hours.
When the weight just won’t move
When you have low thyroid, it’s very difficult to lose weight. So before blaming willpower, it’s worth looking at your blood tests. As a doctor, I need numbers, the right numbers.
The point is to teach people to fish, not just to feed them.
