When selenium is Less Abundant in the body

When selenium is less in amount, it lasts various repercussion on human body. Biologically both oxidation and reduction take place in human body. they are called as “redox reactions”. These are used for the production of ATP. And, considered to be body’s energy currency. Digestion is the prime example of redox reactions. But when oxidation takes place solely, it can be harmful to the body.

When a species undergoes oxidation – it gives electron- and becomes a free radical. These free radicals are very harmful to the human body. They can cause heart attack, stroke, cancer and other complications. The body must avoid this process.

Selenium as a rescuer

Selenium conjugates with vitamin E, which is also an important component of body’s matrix. In short, selenium runs a detoxification process and helps the body to get rid of these destructive chemical substances.

Selenium as a regulator of iodine

Iodine is also an important element required by the body. It is necessary for thyroid gland and its imbalance can lead to serious complications like goiter. Selenium plays a chief role in regulating the amount of iodine. This, in turn, regulates the TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone), Thyroxin and triiodothyronine. They have a vast role in the metabolism of the body. In nutshell, selenium helps in regulating the metabolic activities. This also affects the growth of human body.

Recycler of vitamin C

It also keeps on recycling vitamin C which is an important part of body’s requirements. This vitamin prevents scurvy (bleeding gums).

Deficiency of selenium

As selenium plays chief roles in defending the body, its deficiency can lead to following symptoms:

  1. Decreased immunity
  2. Thyroid dysfunction
  3. Formation of tumours
  4. Erectile dysfunction
  5. Impotency
  6. Decreased libido
  7. Stunted growth
  8. Skin problems
  9. Increased  risk of heart attack

Foods containing selenium

Following intakes can be used to replenish the amount of selenium in the body

  • Tuna
  • Brazil nuts
  • Chicken
  • Eggs
  • Spinach

These foods should be taken in order to maintain normal amount of selenium in the human body. The normal range of selenium in the human body is 50mcg.

How to treat deficiency of selenium

This can be treated by giving supplements. Moreover, you should avoid toxic intakes particularly junk food.  You should make a habit of daily exercise. Taking herbs can also help to detoxify body.

Conclusion

To conclude, selenium is an important element. It helps to detoxify different organs. It also reduces the number of free radicles to some extent. Moreover, it regulates the iodine levels in the body. This helps in proper growth of the body. In children, it is very important. Its deficiency can cause hair loss, cancer, erectile dysfunction, and stroke. These complications can prove fatal. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain required levels of selenium in the body.
